2000 notes

The Reserve Bank of India announced the withdrawal of 2000 currency notes from circulation on May 19, 2023. Those who have 2000 notes can deposit them into their accounts or swap them for bank notes of other denominations by September 30th, 2023. The exchange facility will go live on May 23, 2023. The present denomination of 2000 will remain legal tender. The RBI has responded to the following relevant questions:

Why were bank notes with denominations of 2000 withdrawn?

Following the elimination of 500 and 1000 currency notes, 2000 currency notes were created to satisfy the needs of the economy. The majority of the 2000 notes were issued before to March 2017 and are nearing the end of their anticipated life cycle of 4-5 years. Also, the other denominations appear to be adequate to suit the public’s money needs. The Reserve Bank of India has decided to withdraw the 2000 denomination banknotes from circulation in accordance with its “Clean Note Policy.” The term “clean note policy” refers to the availability of high-quality bank notes to the general public.

Can we use the 2000 currency notes in everyday transactions?

Definitely. The legal tender status of the 2000 notes will be maintained. The public can continue to use 2000 notes, however it is recommended that they deposit or exchange them by the end of September 2023.

The RBI encourages people to deposit and/or exchange these banknotes by September 30, 2023. The RBI has not stated whether or not the Rs 2,000 note would be valid after September 30. However, given that the public’s deadline for returning the notes is September 30, the question of whether the note will be legitimate after that date emerges.
